‘Elf Super Cup opener this weekend’
This Saturday night AmPro Tools Woodford Glen Speedway presents the Mastagard Recycling and Waste Services, ‘Elf Super Cup’. With just over 20 entries confirmed for the opening round of this year’s series, fans can expect to see some of the best ‘wheel to wheel’ Super Saloon racing on offer this summer. Already fans have been treated to some great racing at the Glen with visiting drivers such as Invercargills Campbell McManaway and Nelson’s Ian Burson showing they are ready to challenge the Glen’s best. An obvious resurgence in the Super Saloon class over the past couple of years has seen many drivers investing a substantial amount of time and money which now equates to some of the closest racing in this class for some time. Unfortunately defending champion and current New Zealand champion Mark Osborne has been ruled out due to a controversial penalty handed down to him by the referee’s after last weekend’s racing in what some are claiming to be harsh. Super Saloon stalwart Dennis Bolt is another who will be missing from the first round due to another penalty from Friday nights racing. However Bolt has chosen to exercise a rule in the Super Cup series which allows a driver to nominate another driver to race their car should the need arise. This has opened the door for Kane Lawson to contest the opener in Bolts brand new Hypermac Chassis.
Nelson’s Ian Burson fired a warning shot to the rest of the field with some superb driving in his first meeting at the Glen on Friday night. After some off season changes team Burson are confident they have the 3NZ Hypermac machine back on the pace. Another to impress early in the season is local driver Willie Woodhouse. After losing an engine at Nelson a couple of weeks back, Woodhouse showed some impressive pace on Friday night and is another to keep an eye on. Local fan favourite Richie Taylor missed opening night some weeks back and had a less than happy debut in his brand new Chev powered Gordge Chassis two weeks back however Friday night was a much better night for the 2NZ machine with a great win in the last race of the night. Taylor is one of only a few not running the very popular Hypermac Chassis, instead choosing to stay with another Murray Gordge built car that has seen the Timaru resident gaining much success over many years.
