"Lightning Construction South Island Saloon Championship
plus Canterbury SuperStock & Modified Championships
Saturday March 7th, 7pm start – where will you be?"
Another South Island champion will be crowned this Saturday night when the Saloon’s hit town for the first ever South Island Saloon Championship to held at Woodford Glen Speedway. Once again south island pride and bragging rights are on the line as the best Saloon drivers from all over the south island converge on the Glen in what will be the biggest field of Saloons to hit the track this season! Heading the entry list is Blenheim’s Paddy North who claimed second place overall at the recent New Zealand Saloon Champs held at his home track of Eastern States Speedway. North is no stranger to the Glen as he also races a Super Saloon very successfully as well as a Sprintcar. Another from the Blenheim club to watch is past New Zealand Champion Rob Flood. Unfortunately last year’s champion Daryl Ainsley of Cromwell will not be defending his title due a move up to the Super Saloon class. However the Central Motors Speedway club will be well represented by the hard charging Peter Schouten and Dave McCallion to name a couple. Jesse Sutherland of Dunedin will be the youngest competitor this weekend. Sutherland is in his first season of Saloon racing after making the step up from youth ministocks and will be keen to impress. Invercargill is also represented by Brent Sterling, Craig Phillips and Lloyd Phillips. Local drivers keen to stand atop the podium are Blair Leigh, Ryan Marsden, Lee Morris, Shane Scott, Arjen Schouten, Dougal McClimont and Phil Smythe. The 2015 Lightning Construction South Island Saloon Championship will see all 25 entrants split in to two qualifying groups with both groups racing two heat races each. Once all four heats have been raced, the top sixteen highest point’s scorers (8 from each group) will transfer directly to the winner takes all final. The driver highest on points will have the choice of starting position off the front row (either grid 1 or 2) for the final. Before the green flag drops for the winner takes all final, a further two drivers have one last chance to make the final and stake a claim for the title. The first two drivers pass the finish line in the last chance repechage race (over 10 laps) will gain entry to the 20 lap final and fill grid positions 17 and 18.
The winner of the Lightning Construction South Island Saloon Championship will be the first driver to cross the finish line after 20 laps! This will be a race of the fittest and promises wheel to wheel Saloon racing at its best!
