Moller Young NZ
Trophy Challenge - Friday 28th October 2011
Woodford Glen has Booming Start by Mat Kermeen
Woodford Glen Speedways opening weekend went off with a bang as a near capacity crowd packed in on Saturday night for the annual Fireworks Extravaganza.
The crowd was treated to one of the regions premier fireworks displays as it crossed between booming bangs to majestic sparkles.
Earlier in the night fans had been warmed up for the big finale by the smooth yet aggressive driving style of former national super salon champion Brent Emerson. A lot of hype had been generated by Emerson’s decision to race the John Lovelady car out of Christchurch and he proved he was up to those expectations.
After three races Emerson had one win and two top five placings to his name but when it really counted in the feature he was at his brilliant best taking a comfortable win over Nelson rival Ian Burson.
Not a bad effort considering he had also picked up the Moller-Young Trophy on Friday night and just piped the promising Mark Grocott in the feature on Friday night.
Stockcar driver Dennis Andreassend was another winner from Friday night who continued his dominance on Saturday with three out of four wins. In a new car this season Andreassend was fast but he may have made himself an early season target.
“I thought I would have received more attention than that but I managed to sneak through a couple of swings at me so I’m happy,” Andreassend said after winning the Moller-Young trophy on Friday night.
