McGinty Contracting Streetstock Canterbury Championship / Ministock Remembrance Champs
Saturday 17th February 2007

Tonights Canterbury Streetstock Championships were kindly brought to us by McGinty Contracting. It took a while for the drivers to get warmed up to the contact and at one stage cars entered turn three 4 wide and there appeared to be less hitting than is often seen in some of the saloon classes. Things however were about to change and before long I think the way some of the guys were driving they must have thought their cars were heavy earthmoving equipment because they didn't seem to care much for anything that was in their way. 76c Alex Gowans appeared to be intent on making it as hard as possible for everyone else with some great attacking moves being handed out. The Team Kiwi Fords appeared to be on the receiving end of some hard hits and the racing was hectic. 8c Colin Robinson was the leader entering the final heat but as usual this also made him high on the target list. It wasn't long before he was stuck with a collapsed r/f suspension and limped to the infield. 83c Shane Anderton won two of the heats but trouble in the second reduced his point haul enough to allow the 73c Holden of Norton Gowans to take away the championship with 53points. Shane managed 2nd overall with 50 points and 54c Kirk aldridge took out the final podium spot on 49 points.

The Ministocks also raced for their Remembrance Championship Plaques tonight. It appeared that some drivers had a team tactic going with blocking becoming apparent to help a mate do well. Unsure if this worked as planned with some failing to last the distance. Unlike with the streetstocks, 87c Glen Marsden had a relatively trouble free run as points leader entering the final heat. He collected 57 points to head off 24c Darrin Kerr by only 1 point. Coming in 3rd overall was the 10c car of Bob Roper on 52 points.

84c Natasha Rodgers in her Modified would just about get my "driver of the night award". After returning from her stint of racing in Auckland she showed the entire field her heels in the first race and even lapped nearly half the class by race end. She looked to be repeating this in the last race but an uncharacteristic spin in turn 4 sadly threw that possibility out the window. And yet again not to be out-done by the contact classes was 15c Rex McIllwrick in his Super Saloon. He had a big tumble along the front straight when trying to pass down the inside of an A Grade Saloon in the Feature Race. His car looked decidedly second hand along with the Modified of 22c Luke Keegan who also rolled in the same straight earlier in the evening.

Note: No ELS data is available for tonights racing.
