Whats all the Hoopla! about? ... Its about 40 of the best Super Saloon drivers in the country vying for a share of the $20,000 prize pool. Its about bragging rights for the winners and its about putting on a two night show that brings out the best from everyone involved. The 9 heats held tonight have already indicated an early points leader with 58c Richie Taylor collecting 39 pts but with another 6 heats tomorrow night before the 30 lap final this is still wide open. I was impressed with the general professional driving on display considering how close the teams are and it was a pleasure to watch the newly crowned national champions showing why they deserve to have such status. 1nz Tony Cardwell made passing look easy in one of his heats and while watching 2nz Josh Boulton I can see just how much he has improved thru the season. 3nz Greg Keegan again showed he has what it takes to handle the distance involved in the final by racing clean & tidy all evening.
The racing was so close throughout the groups and sometimes got too close with car bumpers becoming hooked together on at least 3 occasions. This resulted in tow truck assistance to seperate them and I think a revisit to some of these bumper bar designs may be required by some teams to alleviate the problem.
As for my regular DON Award (Driver Of the Night) ... this is very difficult mainly because of the quality of drivers on hand. One worthy of mention is the "hanging it sideways" attitude of 111p Brent Emerson but I can't look past the great race by 28c Steve Petersen who in his rookie year in Super Saloons was passing cars and chasing Richie Taylor hard out in his 2nd heat. Well Done Steve (Half Arse to his mates) on winning this meetings DON Award.
