Super Saloon Champion of Champions

Saturday Night ... Was it local track knowledge or was it the wise over the young? ... whatever you decide, it was 6c Dennis Bolt who emerged the victor after 15 heats of Super Saloon action which took us into the 25 lap final. Dennis and his team looked to be on the pace all weekend and came on particularly strong at the right time. Dennis was interviewed by Phil Dark of Sky TV at the beginning of the evening and his reply was "I only need to lead the last lap of the 25 lap final to take this title". Well not only did he lead that last lap but he showed the oppostion his intentions in the shoot-out and led virtually from start to finish in the final. Ex NZ champion 121w Donald Gregory took up the challenge to Bolt but could not find a way past and had to settle for second overall and his car was in plenty of pieces right up to the start of the race so this was a worthy result for him and his team for their trouble. 3rd overall went to last seasons champion 17c Greg Keegan who again came on strong from an average grid start to a fast finishing car in the final laps.

The support racing was bolstered by 2nz Scotty Lane joining the Modifieds before next weekends Invasion although 29c Glen Leech showed him he means business by getting the better of him by the end of the evening. The Superstocks carried on where they left off from the previous night with big hits and "wallings" of cars being the norm. 16c Mark Osborne emerged best out of the carnage and produced a couple of victory lap donuts to please the huge crowd.

Friday Night ... A bunch of the best Super Saloon drivers the nation has to offer merged on Woodford Glen tonight to stamp their marks on the annual Champion of Champions meeting. The first to show the way was 96a Lance Jennings who led home local favourite 6c Dennis Bolt. The north island contingent began to show through in the heats when 1nz Brent Emerson, 9w Mark Pitcher and 24w Martin Halcrow had wins but not to be outdone were 32c Martin Harcourt and 891d Josh Boulton. If I had to pick an overnight leader it would have to be Halcrow or Boulton both of whom had two heat wins apiece.

Take in a lap with Dennis Bolt ...

19c Malcolm Ngatai also had two wins in the Superstocks but his winning way was halted by 36c Terry Hall and I would say we haven't seen the end of this battle either.
