Super
Saloon Champion of Champions
Saturday 1st April 2006
What a way to finish off the season here at
Woodford Glen. The Remembrance Championships were
completed tonight along with the season finale Demolition
Derby but the highlight was most definately the SUPER
fast and SUPER impressive SUPER SALOONS. 15 heats over 2
nights to determine the grid draw for the 16 car 25 lap,
winner take all final. This race was one to remember with
the early pace setter 24w Martin Halcrow racing off to
nearly a half lap lead. But as so frequently happens a
caution light takes that huge lead away and suddenly the
remainder of the pack starts to pounce on the leader. I
personally picked Halcrow to win this but in doing so I
only managed to jinx his luck (sorry Martin) and after
the race got underway 2nz Brent Emerson took over the
lead. 8a Tony Cardwell also took little time before he
put the pressure on and managed to sneak through to lead
the race in the dying laps and was looking like he had
the race under control (although slowing the pack
considerably thru the north bend). But in the final
corner of the race 17c Greg Keegan saw an opening and
made a passage for himself and Emerson to pass Cardwell
and relegate him back to third. This was an awesome
display of superbly controlled driving by the best in New
Zealand and Greg Keegan and his team can be proud of the
final result. Emerson (who suggested throughout the
weekend that he was struggling with the Woodford Glen
track) was most deserving of his 2nd place overall.
The other highlight of the
evening was watching 84c Natasha Rodgers get the result
she has deserved all season. After early season
reliablity issues followed by extremely bad luck in the
Canterbury Champs, the NZ champs & the Dirt Cup,
Natasha showed she will be back with a vengeance next
season. She made it look so easy tonight winning 2 of the
three heats over the opposition to easily take out the
Remembrance Championships. |

Super
Saloon Champion of Champions
Friday 31st March 2006
Another great sight at Woodford Glen is the
pits full of top super saloons. Tonight we were
privileged to have the likes of 2nz Brent Emerson, 3nz
Lance Jennings, 24w Martin Halcrow and the welcome return
of 8a Tony Cardwell. Add to this the Boulton racing team
turning out two prestine cars (one for Bruce and the
other for Josh, returning to the driving duties after leg
injuries) and the scene was certainly set for a weekend
of scorching action. The locals weren't to be outdone and
claimed several heat victories over the very quick north
island cars but definately a threat to take top honours
are Emerson & Halcrow. Cardwell showed why he has
held 1nz so many times with impressive speed to take a
heat win but unluckily tipped the car onto its roof later
in the evening. There is going to be plenty of work required overnight and during saturday for several of the Super Saloon teams but I for one would not count out any of these guys to be forging their way to the front again on saturday. So ...... Where will you be saturday night? The A Grade Saloons & the Production Saloons also raced for their Remembrance Championships plaques tonight. 89c Mike Allan & 68c Gerry Filius won their classes respectively. |
