South Island Modified Championship
Canterbury Streetstock Championship
Saturday 5th April 2008

Tonights programme provided action aplenty for fans of virtually any class of speedway racing. The South Island Modified Championships attracted 11 entrants and 29c Glen Leech showed why he is nicknamed "Leadfoot". He took a clean sweep of all three heats to claim maximum points forcing the rest of the field to fight over the remaining placings. And fight they did ... 84c Natasha Rodgers was an early casualty suffering front end damage to her car. The next to take up the challenge was 871c Luke Keegan who looked like a sure placegetter until his engine failed to fire up for the final heat. 4c Mike Gourley just narrowly avoided tipping his car over after mid race contact with Leech caused him to spin in the back straight. He was lucky to survive and pressed on to take 2nd overall for the meeting. Visitor 5gm Brandon Parkinson would be pleased to take away 3rd placing after limping home with damaged suspension in one of the heats proving that there were plenty of others also having trouble.

The Canterbury Streetstock Championship was nowhere near as easily decided. 17c Blair Leigh became a marked man after winning the first two heats. But 8c Colin Robinson spoiled Leigh's good run by holding him back at the start of heat three. This allowed the pack to get away and left Leigh having to limp round with a very wounded car. This allowed the ever consistent 54c Kirk Aldridge to sneak through and take the championship. 55c Keith Anderson & 92c Robert McSherry managed to avoid the carnage going on in the 28 car field to take the remaining podium placings. To finish the season off the streetstocks also raced for a "Butchers Picnic" trophy in an extra last race. This provided some huge hits and the survivors to take away the honours were 73c Norton Gowans, 64c Jason Skurr & 69c Brian Hurst.

The Stockcars ran their Remembrance Championship tonight and also put on quite an impressive display of tactics racing. The usual front runners came a bit unstuck allowing 96c Donald Inns to take the win and another visitor, this time 48gm Dave Terris took 2nd just ahead of 98c Russell Tuuta.

This was the last meeting of the season and its probably just as well for some of the saloon car builders. The way some of the cars were being treated tonight means there is going to be plenty of work to be done in the off-season for some. At times it appeared the super saloons were attempting their own "Butchers Picnic" which I'm sure will keep the fibreglass repairers busy for a while.

On that note we look forward to the return of racing in October and wish everyone a safe winter.
