Spares Kamikaze Derby
A Grade Saloon & Production Saloon Canterbury Championships
Saturday 10th March 2007
2nd 89c Mike
Allan, 3rd 51c Jason Campbell, 1st 43c Mark Sangster
Tonights Canterbury Championships were kindly brought to us by Kiwi Auto Spares. The A Grade Saloons looked to be a hard fought battle with a couple of the front runners suffering damage knocking them out early. Several of the cars during the course of the evening either suffered from panel damage or punctures but the drive of night in this class came from 51c Jason Campbell in the final heat. He took his corvette from the rear of the grid and drove round the opposition for a fine 2nd placing. The points were very tight and 43c Mark Sangster took out the title with 34 points. A coin toss was required to decide the final places on the podium with 89c Mike Allan winning over 51c Jason Campbell both of them emerging with 32 points each.
1st 76c James
Archbold, 2nd 17c Willie Woodhouse, 3rd 65c Walter Whittleston
The Production Saloons appeared to follow on with the panel damage as many cars returned to the pits after each race with bumpers dragging or rearranged bodywork. This class is always hard fought between the front and rear wheel drive cars and tonight proved to be no exception. The win had to be decided by another coin toss with 76c James Archbold happily taking the win over 17c Willie Woodhouse, both accumulating 34 points. 3rd place overall warranting a "drive of the night award" was 65c Walter Whittleston who was only 2 points in arrears and this is only his first season of racing.
The Superstocks & Stockcars ran a "Battle of the Stocks Prologue" as an appertiser before next weekends huge event. It was run in the same format with drivers racing in drawn pairs. The highlight of this was 19c Malcolm Ngatai tipping over 81c Blaine Blyth in the final heat. If this racing is anything to go by then don't miss out on next weekends action. Over the three heats there were only a handful of DNF's but emerging from the "Battle" in the front were 79c Rodney Hern & 16c Roger Nees making his Superstock debut. The pair led for a majority of the evening and finished with 127 points just two points clear of 19c Malcolm Ngatai & 42c Kevin Nortman. 3rd overall went to the pairing of 4c Stephen Bishop & 89c Jason Smith on 111 points.
In the remaining support classes the modifieds were dominated by 29c Glen Leech winning all three races. 19c Chris Leigh won two of his three races in the Streetstocks and the wins were shared in the Super Saloons between 6c Dennis Bolt, 58c Richie Taylor & 881 Bruce Boulton. The Kamikaze Derby produced the usual mayhem which we are accustomed to and emerging from the carnage were #4 Edgar Wahig, #24 - Kris Elkington, #26 - Kyle Wilkinson.
